There is a ton of bad design in the world. It is all around us and we see it every day. Discomfort Creative does not like it. That’s why we pick up the standard every day for our clients and wage war against bad design and general low-quality marketing. Unfortunately, bad design is entrenched and encamped in many places. That is why we’ve started “Design Ambush”. We sneak up on bad design and attack it, hopefully waking up the business owner in the process so that they can see the true potential of their product.
This week, Discomfort Creative is taking over and remaking Mamba energy drink in our first ever design ambush. We’re scrapping their tired look in favor of something fresh and modern. Consider the following:
A mamba is a venomous and fast-moving snake found all throughout Africa. There are 5 species and all of them are deadly. Mambas are sleek and elegant compared to other snakes. This helps them survive in the wild.
Mamba is an energy drink found in Nigeria and Ghana. There is one flavor and it tastes pretty good. Compared to other energy drinks, Mamba’s design is clunky. It looks like it came out of a vending machine that only sells products from the mid-1990s. It may be hard to believe but this drink hit the market in 2015. This design will not help them survive in the marketplace.
We took our inspiration from the mamba found in the wild. The chunky 1990s font is gone. We replaced it with a custom font that looks like a contorted snake. Stop-sign red is gone. We’ve replaced it with a trio of colors that are more visually appealing. Perhaps, most importantly, we scrapped the green cloud behind the logo. We rotated in just enough snakeskin at the bottom of the can to evoke the reptile-feel while avoiding it being tacky. We even made the social media icons look like they belong there.
